Pros and Cons of Using Wix Website Builder

With the dozens of different website builders out there, it's tough to know which one offers exactly what you need. With a reported 35 million registered users and an estimated 1.3 million new monthly users, Wix seems to be on to something, but numbers aren't the only players in the website building game.

We're going to take a look at several different aspects of Wix like its template offerings, tools, support, and pricing to give you the best of the pros and the worst of the cons.

Pro: Wix offers more than 280 beautiful templates for your customizing pleasure. Most of the templates are HTML5-based, making them search engine and Apple device friendly, but if you're stuck on flash-based designs, they have those, too. Once you pick a template, all you need to do is swap in your own pictures, text, and content and you're set.

Con: Once you choose a template, you're stuck with it. The one place Wix suffers a lot of complaints is that once you've chosen a template, you can't simply switch to a different template when you feel like a redesign. Prepare yourself to start completely from scratch if you ever want a different look. You also can't export your template to use on a different website builder because the code is custom to Wix, meaning if you choose Wix, divorce is not an option.

Pro: Wix has a diverse App Market with premium and free add-ons to your site. If you want to add a survey, form, Google Maps, or even a shopping cart, the App market has dozens of options to set up your website to represent your brand perfectly.

Con: There is no native blogging app, you have to install a third-party application. Although you can install Tumblr or Blogger through the App Market, the lack of a native blogging application is a huge gripe by many. Fresh, constant content gives search engine web crawlers a reason to keep coming back to push your website up in Google, Yahoo, and Bing searches. Without a built-in blogging tool, you might forget to even update your content, threatening your SEO success.

Pro: The free version offers you complete access to all of the tools you need to build a successful website. With intuitive drag 'n' drop tools, Wix is incredibly easy to use. Using WYSIWIG (What You See is What You Get), you know that the way your website looks in the builder is exactly how it will appear on the web. Wix also is often hailed for offering many advanced editing tools that other website builders don't with a free subscription.

Con: With a free subscription comes Wix ads and no access to ecommerce tools. The adage that nothing in life is free is true with most website builders, but with Wix you end up with loud ads in both the header and the footer. Likewise, you miss out on essential perks like shopping cart tools and can suffer the mistake of over-designing your website.

One major pro that doesn't have a matching con is Wix's customer service. Every step of the process you'll find help options, and the site features 24/7 support over the phone, through email, and with live chat. You'll also find tutorials and help videos along the way, making Wix a great place to start if you don't know much about website building.
